What is Periodontology?
Periodontology is the diagnosis and treatment of conditions which affect the gums and the tissues and structures which hold the teeth in place. Periodontal disease can start with gingivitis which affects the gums and can, if left untreated, become periodontitis, which affects the deeper supporting structures in the mouth. Symptoms of periodontal disease include red, sensitive gums, gums bleeding when brushed, detachment of the gums from the teeth, loose teeth and constant bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth. Periodontal disease is very serious because can it lead to pain, permanent tooth loss and problems with eating and speaking.
