Protruding Teeth and Jaw Alignment
(Functional Appliance Therapy)
What is a functional appliance?
A functional appliance is a type of orthodontic brace which is used to correct problems caused when the top teeth bite in front of the lower teeth. This can create issues with speech and with eating, as well as significantly affecting your confidence. Functional appliances are commonly used for patients whose mouths are still developing and they can be either fixed or removable. Removable functional appliances are usually made from separate upper and lower parts which fit together to put the lower jaw into a more advanced position. However, there are other types of functional appliances which are made from just one piece. For younger patients, a popular option is the Invisalign MA (Mandibular Advanced) appliance, an advanced option which helps to change the bite.
Is a functional appliance right for me?
A functional appliance can help remove the need for the patient to have extractions to resolve the issue with their teeth. It could also help to shorten the length of treatment time. The only way to be sure whether a particular orthodontic treatment is right for you is to have personalised, expert advice.
